Project - Cheam

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Epsom and Ewell, the Cheam Project stands as a testament to the transformation of a post war detached dwelling into a modern haven. This project revolved around the comprehensive modernization of both the interior and exterior, breathing new life into the property.

The focal point of the Cheam Project is the meticulous revitalization of the property’s fabric and appearance. Through innovative design approaches and a wraparound ground floor extension, the living spaces were not only expanded but also maximized, creating a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and functional living.

Design Brief

Located in a serene part of Cheam, surrounded by open spaces, the original dwelling faced limitations in fenestration, resulting in dark and disjointed internal areas that overlooked the potential of the lush surroundings. Constrained by a modest budget, the design brief focused on a ground-floor reinvention, aiming to forge an open-plan living space that embraces abundant natural light, cultivating a contemporary and family-friendly atmosphere.

Navigating the constraints of the Green Belt, our collaboration with the clients was integral. The regulated volumetric additions of the wraparound extension were meticulously tailored to maximize internal layout efficiency while fostering an optimal connection with the adjacent garden. The finalized design not only achieved this harmonious integration but, through strategic modifications to the existing structure, also curated living spaces that balance the abundance of natural light with the cosiness essential for comfort and a sense of privacy.

Architecture

Confronting budgetary constraints, the architectural vision for the extension prioritized lightweight construction. The framework, crafted entirely from timber, not only embraced sustainability but also met modern efficiency standards after being meticulously insulated. To balance cost-effectiveness without compromising aesthetics, the exterior was clad in all-weather cement board, an economical yet striking alternative to Zinc.

The proposal incorporated distinctive architectural elements aligned with the revised internal layout. Notable features include floating corner bifold doors, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces during summer. An up-and-over eaves rooflight was strategically placed, creating a unique seating area and a garden vista at the corridor’s end. Interventions in glazing maximized natural light intake, transforming internal spaces into a luminous and inviting family home.

Externally, the rejuvenation of tired timber cladding utilized Hardie Cement boards, artfully designed with trims to juxtapose the original render and brickwork of the host dwelling. This cladding, extending to the first floor, seamlessly ties the original house to the contemporary extension, culminating in a property that bears no resemblance to its dark and dreary predecessor.

Interior Design

The interior of the property underwent a full revitalization, meticulously ensuring a seamless blend between the original dwelling and the new extension. Consistency in key aspects was prioritized, creating a sense of uniformity and cohesion throughout.

Brass detailing, concrete-effect finishes, and a deliberately bright and neutral backdrop were thoughtfully incorporated. This design choice resulted in a light and airy interior, strategically crafted to let furnishings take centre stage in this family home.

Careful consideration was given to fenestration, ensuring it complemented internal circulation. At the termination of each transitional space, strategically placed windows draw the eye to the garden and the lush greenery beyond, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and the picturesque surroundings.

Design Details

At the heart of the Cheam Road project was an unwavering commitment to maximizing natural light intake, sculpting a residence that feels both bright and spacious. This dedication provided an ideal canvas to seamlessly integrate architectural detailing that harmonizes with the internal layouts and the new build aspects, finding the best possible way of combining the two to achieve the best result.

A pivotal element in bathing the living spaces in an abundance of light is the Bi-Part Floating corner in the open-plan kitchen. Paired with a generously sized rooflight above, this design feature orchestrates a bright and airy atmosphere throughout the spaces.

The up-and-over eaves rooflight adds a touch of sophistication, carving out a designated reading space that basks in the glow of natural light. Careful fenestration arrangements further ensure that, regardless of your location within the property, there’s always a visual connection to the outside world, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to the surroundings.
