Located in the vibrant heart of Bermondsey, adjacent to the iconic London Bridge, the Bermondsey Project unfolds as a testament to innovative design and urban sophistication. This venture encompasses the meticulous refurbishment of a distinctive penthouse apartment, coupled with a thoughtful reconfiguration of the principal entrance and rooftop terrace.
The space, adorned with contemporary finishes, reclaimed industrial furnishings, and vibrant splashes of colour, emerges as a modern and urbane haven. Paying homage to the local industrial heritage, the Bermondsey Project is a striking fusion of the old and the new, creating an inviting space that resonates with the dynamic spirit of its surroundings.
Design Brief
The project started with the intention of re-inventing the principal entrance to the property, allowing the client to walk into a central private courtyard with a contemporary and industrial feel, as well as reallocating the internal spaces and refurbishing the roof terrace.
A key aspect was maintaining the use of industrial materials throughout as an acknowledgement of the history of the area. The project is tucked away, only to be found by people who know where it is and uses carefully placed lightwells to maximise the intake of natural light.
Interior Design
The Bermondsey Project’s interior was meticulously crafted, beginning with the remodelled entrance that now welcomes occupants into a purposeful entrance hall, creating a gradual reveal of internal spaces. This subtle alteration transforms the experience into a journey, each space unfolding in a carefully coordinated sequence.
Inside, distinct areas were thoughtfully defined through strategic lighting, allowing subtle separation within the expansive open plan layout. A standout feature is the Bio-ethanol Fireplace, serving as a focal point that together the various spaces together.
The rooftop terrace underwent a transformation, evolving into a tranquil oasis tucked away behind the lively atmosphere of Bermondsey Street—an urban escape right in the heart of London.
Finishes throughout were chosen with precision, incorporating industrial materials to honour the property’s heritage. This industrial aesthetic was artfully balanced with splashes of colour and vibrancy, creating a dynamic interplay that captures the eye and guides users through the spaces. The Bermondsey Project is a testament to the art of balance, seamlessly blending history, function, and contemporary aesthetics into a harmonious and inviting living environment.
Architecture
The Bermondsey Project embarked with a clear objective: to reimagine the primary entrance, leading the client into a central, private courtyard exuding a contemporary and industrial ambiance. Simultaneously, the design brief involved the strategic reallocation and definition of the internal spaces and a comprehensive refurbishment of the rooftop terrace.
A pivotal element in the design was the unwavering commitment to preserving the industrial essence of the area. Through the use of a key material palette, this served homage to the rich history of the surroundings. Nestled discreetly, the project remains a hidden gem known only to those familiar with its location.
Cleverly placed lightwells became instrumental in this pursuit, artfully maximizing the intake of natural light to illuminate the space in harmony with its industrial roots. The Bermondsey Project stands as a testament to thoughtful design, seamlessly blending history and contemporary aesthetics to create an inviting retreat in the heart of Southeast London.
