Principle design
Designing the cinema within a private residence presented an extraordinary opportunity to delve into every aspect of the space, focusing on materials, functionality, storage, and comfort. Our goal was to create an environment that exuded luxury while offering the ultimate setting for indulging in the full cinematic experience.
Central to the design was the seating area, meticulously positioned as the focal point of the audio projection and optimized for the perfect viewing distance from the screen. Behind the screen, custom joinery was crafted to house large bass speakers and lightweight amplifiers, projecting sound seamlessly forward. Additionally, a screen was mounted atop the joinery to absorb and counterbalance ambient lighting, enhancing the cinematic immersion.
At the rear of the cinema, we envisioned a bar area to accommodate additional guests during sports events, complete with a small media store housing server, hardware storage, and, of course, the essential popcorn machine. This multifunctional space was conceived to offer not only entertainment but also practicality and convenience, ensuring that every aspect of the cinema contributed to an unforgettable viewing experience.
Finishes
Every finish within the cinema was thoughtfully selected to not only evoke a sense of warmth and luxury but also to elevate the cinematic experience to its fullest potential. The walls were adorned with a specialized fabric boasting a luxurious velvet effect, chosen not only for its sumptuous texture but also for its acoustically absorbent properties. This strategic choice not only imbued the space with a deep, tactile richness but also ensured that sound was absorbed rather than reflected, enhancing audio clarity and immersion.
To further enhance the ambiance and comfort, a rich carpet was selected to envelop the entire space, inviting guests to sink into its plush embrace. This carefully curated combination of finishes created a cocooning atmosphere, where every detail was tailored to enhance the cinematic journey.
Form
The design of the cinema prioritized maximizing the viewing experience, with careful attention given to positioning the seating to optimize sensory immersion. To achieve this, the seating arrangement was strategically configured, with the rear row elevated on a platform to ensure an unobstructed view for every guest.
The ceiling was meticulously designed to feature a custom undulating form at the centre of the space, complemented by a bulkhead framing it to match the proportions of the screen. This bespoke ceiling design not only contributed to the acoustic properties of the room but also provided housing for the carefully integrated lighting elements, enhancing the internal layout with subtle yet impactful illumination.
The harmonious interplay between the elevated seating platform, the sculptural ceiling form, and the meticulously designed bulkhead not only enhanced the visual appeal of the cinema but also elevated the overall viewing experience, creating a space where form seamlessly integrates with function to immerse guests in the magic of cinema.
Lighting
The lighting scheme for the cinema demanded meticulous attention to detail, aiming to provide optimal illumination for various activities while maintaining an immersive cinematic atmosphere. To achieve this, we implemented a sophisticated approach by dividing the lighting into multiple zoned circuits and pre-programming scenes for effortless control.
Our focus was on enhancing side transitional spaces, illuminating the angled ceiling, and incorporating low-level circuits below the stairs to ensure a well-balanced ambiance throughout the room. Careful consideration was given to selecting lighting products that could be dimmed to minimal levels without compromising the viewing experience, allowing for seamless adjustments to suit different moods and occasions. By strategically zoning and programming the lighting, we aimed to create a versatile environment that effortlessly transitions between different activities while preserving the immersive quality of the cinematic experience.
