Project - Parkside

At its core, Parkside breathes new life into an originally unmodernized two-storey Edwardian residence, carefully preserved and locally listed within a conservation area. Meticulously designed to respect the historical context, the project preserves and refurbishes the principal façade, paying homage to the heritage that defines Wimbledon’s charm where tradition meets innovation, and every detail tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship.

This resulting home not only meets but exceeds contemporary living standards while maintaining a harmonious coexistence with its surroundings. Parkside stands as a testament to thoughtful design, blending the old and the new to create a living experience that resonates with elegance and sophistication.

Design Brief

The original dwelling at Parkside faced the test of time, resulting in a lacklustre appearance, limited access to the enchanting garden, and living spaces bereft of natural light. The challenge was clear: to craft a modern, functional family home that not only respected local listing and architectural style but also maximized the property’s connection to its remarkable garden.

Navigating planning constraints, the project retained the original street-facing façade while demolishing the rest. The new design, spanning four floors, paid homage to key architectural details contributing to the local listing. Each level was purposefully arranged, featuring generous ceiling heights and meticulously crafted details.

Beyond the main house, Parkside expanded to include a Garage, Home Office, Indoor Pool, Spa, Wine Cellar, and Cinema. Collaborating with visionary clients, the project unfolded as a delightful exploration of innovative solutions within unique constraints. Parkside stands as a testament to transforming challenges into a contemporary haven, where elegance meets functionality.

Interior Design

Parkside’s distinct levels provide a canvas for diverse interior styles seamlessly linked by a captivating, curved staircase.

In the basement, a contemporary aesthetic takes centre stage, featuring a polished concrete floor and crittall partitions that amplify natural light through strategically placed lightwells.

On the Ground floor, tradition takes the lead with herringbone timber flooring, lofty ceilings, and classic architectural details, such as plinth blocks and cornicing, paying homage to the home’s original character, creating an atmosphere of serenity.

A discreet tunnel connects the main house to the outdoor pool, housing an underground spa within the garden.

Throughout the property, consistent details weave each space together while allowing functionality to dictate the design. The basement transforms into an open-plan haven with a gym, games room, Bar, and wine cellar – perfect for entertaining and play. Meanwhile, the Ground floor accommodates an Open Plan kitchen, formal dining, living room, and snug, each space designed for seamless connectivity and accessibility, epitomizing the essence of a welcoming family home.

Architecture

Working harmoniously with the retained façade, the envelope of Parkside was meticulously crafted to echo the original architectural language, ensuring a seamless integration of the old and new. This preservation played a pivotal role in shaping the volumes of the principal elevation, maintaining a cohesive connection with neighbouring houses.

Internally, Parkside was designed to offer clear “vistas” throughout, strategically positioned to optimize natural light intake and establish an optimal relationship with the enchanting garden. A contemporary curved stair, positioned at the heart of the house, unites all floors, allowing light to cascade through the core of the residence. This thoughtful design not only honours the past, but also embraces modern living, transforming Parkside into a luminous and inviting family home.
