Project - Black Lion Lane

Located in the heart of Hammersmith, London, the Black-Lion Project emerges as a testament to the modernization of a terraced Georgian property through strategic interventions, including a ground floor rear extension, first floor rear extension, and loft conversion.

The proposal orchestrates a comprehensive reconfiguration of the internal layout, unveiling a generous master suite and two additional bedrooms, seamlessly marrying the elegance of Georgian architecture with contemporary living.

Design Brief

Commencing with the conventional terraced layout featuring a dimly lit kitchen in the property’s outrigger and internal spaces craving natural light, the Black-Lion Project embarked on a journey of reimagining and modernization.

The design brief evolved to prioritize the optimization of natural light intake, unlocking the loft’s potential, and a complete overhaul of the ground floor layout. This transformation aimed to introduce a modern open-plan living space, a dedicated utility area, ample storage, and a home office. The collaboration with clients was paramount, aligning the delivery with both their financial constraints and aesthetic aspirations, translating detailed drawings into tangible on-site construction.

Nestled within a conservation area, external materiality became a pivotal consideration. Careful attention was paid to ensure the new build seamlessly integrated with the existing dwelling, respecting the architectural heritage of the surroundings. Modifications were made to maximize natural light in the principal living spaces, fostering a harmonious relationship with the rear garden.

The resulting layout unveiled a master suite with an ensuite bathroom and custom wardrobes, along with two additional bedrooms and a home office on the ground floor. The Black-Lion Project stands as a testament to the delicate balance of tradition and modernity, where thoughtful design breathes new life into historical charm.

Interior Design

The interior of the Black-Lion Project was an exploration of colour and texture, infusing life and character into every corner. The flexible nature of the first and second floors called for cohesive motifs that were woven through the property, providing a base for a seamless visual harmony.

On the ground floor, a timeless aesthetic was achieved through the predominant use of traditional materials such as timber and marble. This choice not only exuded sophistication but also provided a solid foundation for the property’s overall design. The result was a space that exuded warmth and elegance, creating a welcoming atmosphere for daily living.

In contrast, the top rooms, designated for the younger occupants, became vibrant canvases filled with colour and themed with beloved children’s classics. This playful and imaginative touch not only created personalized spaces for the children but also added an element of whimsicality and joy to the overall design narrative.

The Black-Lion Project’s interior design is a testament to the artful integration of tradition and modernity, creating a home that is not only visually stunning but also tailored to the unique personalities and preferences of its inhabitants.

Architecture

The Black-Lion Project’s architectural narrative revolves around the creation of a versatile ground floor space, offering the flexibility to seamlessly transition between open-plan expansiveness and individualized segregation. This dynamic was achieved through the integration of generous pocket doors and custom glazed doors, not only providing a sense of privacy and enclosure but also facilitating the fluid transition of light and establishing a visual connection between spaces.

The Master suite, designed with meticulous consideration, mirrors this architectural language. A direct relationship between the bedroom and the master bathroom is fostered through the careful use of a glazed Crittall divider. This architectural element not only maximizes natural light but also enhances the sense of openness within the property, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics at the heart of the Black-Lion Project.

Design Details

The Black-Lion Project was not just a renovation but a meticulous journey in design details, where every built-in joinery piece throughout the house was a custom creation, tailored to meet the unique needs of the users. This extensive process involved the customization of off-the-shelf products and the conception of entirely new designs to ensure the optimal outcome

The theme of each piece of joinery was carefully curated to mirror the theme of the rooms, fostering a seamless visual flow, and maximizing the efficient use of space. This bespoke approach not only added a touch of individuality to each space but also allowed for a harmonious integration of design elements throughout the property.

Extending this attention to detail into the outdoors, the garden became an extension of the home’s material finishes. A bespoke fire pit and BBQ were thoughtfully designed and constructed, further exemplifying the commitment to precision and cohesiveness in every aspect of the Black-Lion Project.
