Principle design
The Secondary staircase serves as a discreet yet essential circulation space behind the scenes. This staircase seamlessly integrates with the contemporary aesthetic of the basement level, enhancing its modern appeal.
To achieve the illusion of a floating staircase, we crafted a bespoke steel framework meticulously anchored to the adjacent retaining walls. Leveraging the property’s existing superstructure allowed us to minimize the visual footprint of the stair, maintaining an open and airy ambiance.
Each aspect of the staircase, from the custom tread supports to the meticulously engineered fixing details, underwent careful consideration. Working closely with skilled metal artisans, we ensured precise fabrication and finished the components with a matte black powder coating for a sleek and understated look.

Finishes
For the floating stair, we employed engineered timber treads meticulously crafted to harmonize with the principal floor finish of the main house. Each tread was custom-made to precisely fit the dimensions and layout of the stair, ensuring seamless integration.
Our attention to detail extended to the deliberate shaping of each tread, strategically concealing the underlying support structure. Additionally, the treads were designed to discreetly accommodate LED lighting elements, enhancing the desired floating and lightweight effect.
This careful combination of materials and design elements not only achieves a cohesive aesthetic but also contributes to the overall ambiance of elegance and sophistication.

Glass Partitions
The crowning feature of the staircase, and the element that unifies its design, is the floating glass partition serving as the central barrier and balustrade. This partition not only provides crucial handrail support and safety against falls but also ensures compliance with building regulations.
The steel structure supporting the staircase was meticulously engineered with brackets designed specifically to accommodate the glass partition. Once the stair was clad, the glass was templated on-site, with fixings meticulously designed to support it at various levels by anchoring it back to the steel structure.
The end result is a staircase that achieves the desired lightweight, floating effect, complemented by a carefully curated material palette echoing the property’s architectural identity. Matte steel accents harmonize with the basement’s Crittall windows, while the timber treads maintain continuity with the ground floor finish.
A strategically positioned large window at the ground floor level allows natural daylight to illuminate the staircase during the day, enhancing its visual impact. The minimalist design not only contributes to the stair’s aesthetic appeal but also ensures that light cascades down into the basement circulation spaces, creating a welcoming and airy atmosphere throughout the property.
